Mixtape

Audio / Video files of songs mentioned in this story

I pushed away the papers and listened to the singing. Miss Eloise was singing her ‘Termination song, “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?” You could hear that high shrill voice all over the plantation.

We left the house. Up at the church, Reverend Ambrose had just started his ‘Termination song, “Amazing Grace.”

“Inez is still giving her fairs up the quarter” . . . “But no music. No dancing. She calls that sinning. If you want your music at a fair, you have to go down to Willie Aaron’s house. Willie has a stack of old low-down blues - Tampa Red, Mercy Dee - you know, all of them.”

Mercy Dee - Oh Oh Please

He got up from the bunk and went to the window and looked up at the buds on the higher branches of the sycamore tree. Through the branches of the tree I could see the sky, blue and lovely and clear. “You Are My Sunshine” was playing on the radio.
